Los Angeles City Bans Plastic Bags
Here is a press release from Health the Bay, one of the main groups that has been working on the issue in southern California for the last few years.
This builds upon Los Angeles County's recent court victory in the lawsuit by Hilex Poly that challenged the County's mandatory 10-cent charge for paper bags as an unconstitutional tax. Hilex Poly lost at the superior court and appellate level, and the appeal was finally declined to be heard by the California Supreme Court. This was great news for the dozens of municipalities (including LA City) that decided to go forward with this "second generation" ordinance structure (a ban on plastic bags & small charge for paper bags) despite the ongoing litigation.
